ABN Registration checklist

An ABN identifies your business on the Australian Business Register. Eligibility depends on your business or enterprise activities; an ABN does not itself register a company.

Business structure and legal name; ACN for an existing company, if applicable.
Business start date, main activities, trading locations and reason for applying.
Business and postal addresses, email, phone and authorised contact details.
Associate details, such as partners, directors or trustees, as applicable to the structure.
Existing or previous ABN details and tax residency information, if applicable.
TFN or identity information may be needed for verification; arrange secure delivery with GPA.
Evidence of business activity or steps taken to start the enterprise, if requested.

ABR: ABN application requirements

Company registration checklist

For a typical Australian proprietary company limited by shares (Pty Ltd). GPA will confirm any additional requirements for your structure.

Proposed company name, alternative names, company type and state or territory of registration.
Registered office and principal business addresses in Australia. Obtain the occupier’s written consent if the company does not occupy the registered office.
For each director and optional secretary: full and former names, residential address, date and place of birth, and signed consent.
For a proprietary company, at least one director must ordinarily reside in Australia. Directors must be at least 18 and apply for a director ID before appointment.
Shareholder names and addresses, share classes, quantities, amounts paid or unpaid, and written agreement to take the shares. Tell GPA if a shareholder is a company or trustee.
Choose replaceable rules, a constitution or a combination. Provide ultimate holding company details if applicable.
Tell GPA the intended business activities, contact person and start date, and whether you also need ABN, TFN, GST or PAYG registration support.

BAS/GST Returns

Prepare your sales, expenses and capital purchase records for BAS and GST reporting.

BAS/GST checklist

Business name, ABN, reporting period and GST accounting method (cash or non-cash).
Completed BAS template or accounting software reports covering sales, expenses and capital purchases.
Sales records, supplier tax invoices, receipts, credit notes and any GST adjustments.
Bank and credit card statements reconciled to the reporting period.
Identify GST-free or other non-taxable transactions and private-use portions. Include ATO activity statement notices and prior adjustments if applicable.
